The King of All Mashups

WOW. This is the best thing I’ve heard in ages. Okay, I do love mashups.

Jaydiohead (Jay-Z and Radiohead) was epic, Eminelton (Eminem and Elton John) was alright; The Grey Album (The Beatles and Jay-Z was okay.

MTV VMA’s

The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards was quite entertaining, but not close to some great nights we have seen in the past.

It was great to see a rejuvenated Britney Spears at the awards show, although it was a shame that she won the night’s big awards, including video of the year. MTV clearly kissed up to Britney, to make up for the disaster at last year’s awards show. Likewise Kanye West, who scored the closing performance, a year after he threw a “Kanye moment” and spazzed out backstage at the awards show.

Lil Wayne owned the night, in my opinion. With a thrilling rendition of “I don’t get it,” “A Milli,” and “Get money,” his performance was the most colourful and memorable, save Rihanna’s crazy costumed dances, and Pink’s balcony jumping antics.

Michael Phelps also made an introduction, and I bet we will be seeing more of the superhuman Olympics hero this year.

Lil’ Wayne: Tha Carter III

I normally wouldn’t listen to the rapper Lil’ Wayne (real name Dwayne Carter). Maybe because he has braids and gold teeth, fitting the stereotype of your bad mainstream rapper. His new album, Tha Carter III, sold over a million copies in the first week of its release, and I had to find out why.

After listening to the CD for a few days now, I understand why there’s been so much hype. Lil’ Wayne is a genius, plain and simple. The album was masterfully crafted to blend his raw flowing style with the high quality beats, produced by the likes of Kanye West, Just Blaze, Swizz Beatz, Wyclef Jean, and Cool & Dre.

In addition to an all-star production team (only Timbaland is missing, but who needs him anyway), he scored collaborations with the likes of Robin Thicke, Jay-Z, and a shocker – Babyface. Yes, that same Babyface from the 80’s and 90’s.

His clever, provocative lyrics make every verse on every song worth listening to. He gets political in a few songs, including Don’t Get It, where he calls out American civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton, and the US justice system. He also references Hillary Clinton, while bragging about his exploits with ‘strong women.’

Tha Carter III is hip-hop at it’s finest. Go get yours now.

PS: I still don’t like “Lollipop.” It’s probably the worst song on the album.
